Thoughts From Amanda: I Hate Emojis as a Communication

Yes, of all the things in the world I can talk about right now… I’m coming for emojis!

The #WokeFam in me is big on preserving language. Communication is developing at a rapid pace and I constantly find myself cringing when my texts are responded to with single emojis. It’s the equivalent to getting the ‘k’ from your partner after a novel text.

I don’t hate all use of emojis. Emojis are definitely enhancing when communicating via text or emails because it’s a toneless media. “I just fell and hit my head,” reads a lot different than “I just fell and hit my head 😂.”

I also find that, in my quest to preserve language, people are forgetting the art of the phone. I’ll never understand how more than 5 texts or emails can be exchanged without clear understanding and still no one thinks to jump on the phone and talk it out.

I’ve actually never examined my emoji aversion this much before. It all started when someone on my team sent a ‘thumbs up’ emoji response to my text and we spiraled into a whole exploration of emoji use. 🤷🏽‍♀️
